History

In 1569, the sculptor Alessandro Vittoria, student of the renowned Jacopo Sansovino, bought some establishments on calle della Pietà in Venice to establish his own workshop, the "bottega". Exactly four hundred years later, in 1969, the Busetti family began their own business in the same location, and opened the Bisanzio Hotel , a small hotel (with only 43 rooms) which the family still owns nowadays. Alessandro Vittoria, with the eye of an artist seeking the best place to give body to his whims, chose these establishments because the area possessed many remarkable qualities that a tourist can appreciate even today: the Bisanzio Hotel is located in Riva degli Schiavoni, which faces the Bacino di San Marco, and is within walking distance of the cultural and economic center of the city.

Due to the precious historical research of Dr. Victoria Avery, from University of Warwick, it is possible even now to recognize the rooms in which the sculptor created his masterpieces. Alessandro Vittoria is the sculptor behind, amongst other things, the decoration of the Marciana Bookstore, the golden staircase in the Palazzo Ducale, and the Cappella Grimani in San Sebastiano.

Plaque in honour of Alessandro Vittoria, erected in 1952 by the town council of Venice, on the front of his former house, now the Best Western Hotel Bisanzio, Venice.
